How was SIM card technology developed

SIM card technology and those of a Multi Network Data Sim that can be provided by a company like www.lister-communications.co.uk/business-mobiles/multi-network-data-sim-cards are incredibly important to the functioning of mobile phones. It is these cards that carry the network’s authentication information and it is also the SIM that ensures that all messages and calls that are made from your device are encrypted and protected across the network.

When mobile phone technology was first developed the subscriber information was stored directly on the device. This meant that people were not only tied to a provider but they were also tied to a particular device. It was soon evident that there was a need for a more adaptable authentication method.

In the 1980s and 1990s a Global System for Mobile Communications was established and introduced the idea of a removable card being placed in mobile devices that would contain all the subscriber information and authentication keys that would then allow them to move between devices if they wished. In the late 1990s this would be developed further by the German company Giesecke and Devrient and the SIM card was developed.

Since the late 1980s there have been further developments in SIM card technology and these cards have not only reduced in size but they have also developed in terms of the information that they can hold. Locked SIMs that can only be used with a specific provider were standard until Multi-network SIM were developed, allowing for ease of movement across providers.
