Vauxhall Corsa Steering Column Fault Codes

When there is a fault with the steering of your Vauxhall Corsa, the Electronic Control Unit (ECU) of your car will record a Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) for the fault of the steering.

What Triggers the Codes

The most common parts to fail in a steering electronics problem are the Electric Power Steering (EPS) control module (usually housed in the steering column), the torque sensor (also housed within the steering column) and the steering column lock unit.

The Code Ranges to Know

Chassis codes (C-codes) are used to diagnose faults with the steering on the Corsa. Some examples of C-codes used to diagnose problems with the steering are: C0460 – EPS Motor/Torque Sensor Circuit Malfunction. C0476 – EPS Motor/Torque Sensor Circuit Malfunction. U-codes are used to diagnose communication problems between modules such as the Body Control Module (BCM) and the EPS Control Module.

What a Code Reader Will and Won’t Show

A diagnostic trouble code is given as a code category. This does not give any indication as to the root cause. The code does enable a search to begin, with the example above enabling a search to begin for a C0460 trouble code, a C0476 trouble code, etc. Also refer to trouble codes for a U-code with the description of a C-code, above.

Soft Faults Versus Hard Faults

A ‘soft’ fault is one that is fixed for good after the part in question has been fixed. A ‘hard’ fault will come back after a few drives. This indicates that there is a problem with a part such as a steering column unit.

Codes that persist after reset to settings, require a component level inspection to establish cause.
