Can you spy a job opportunity?

If you fancy a job with a difference and don’t mind a lengthy and very thorough recruitment process then why not consider a career in intelligence? GCHQ , MI5 and MI6 are at the head of national security and a career in British intelligence will take you to these most secretive of places. They are involved in countering terrorist threats, cyber attacks and preventing organised crime. The three agencies work together to achieve their collective mission which is to protect the UK from any kind of threat. Be prepared to have an in depth DBS Check. GCHQ is a large doughnut shaped building on the outskirts of Cheltenham in Gloucestershire. It is the UK’s signals intelligence agency which started off life as codebreaking but now reaches far into the world of communications, understanding global threats and gathering and analysing intelligence. Their work includes tackling terrorism, cyber crime and those involved in the trafficking of drugs or people. They seek to recruit the brightest talent so that they can evolve as fast as technology does.

MI5 is the UK’s security service who are busy safeguarding the country against national security threats such as terrorism, cyber attacks, weapons of mass destruction and sabotage of any kind. Suspected individuals or organisations are investigated and intelligence is gathered relating to these threats. They are also involved in things like protective security by helping to reduce the vulnerability of the national infrastructure.

MI6 is the really sneaky one and you might imagine the organisation being full of secret agents. It works covertly abroad in defense of the interests of the UK. This also involves tackling terrorism and dealing with conflicts that threaten to harm the UK’s economy or people. Supporting the work of both the MI5 and GCHQ, they employ the latest technology based on human intelligence.

You wouldn’t get into GCHQ very easily though as it’s one of the most top secret sites in the UK. The building is surrounded by a two metre high metal fence that is topped with razor wire. There are dozens of security guards, CCTV cameras and about six vehicle checkpoints. The site is as big as Wembley Stadium and whilst nobody really knows what happens inside, it is thought that they have the capability to intercept and listen in on phone calls, text messages and emails.

If you think you’ve got what it takes to a part of the intelligence community then maybe you could take a look at the first puzzle book that GCHQ has released which features more than 140 pages of codes, puzzles and challenges which have been created by spy experts in their spare time. There is a foreword by the Duchess of Cambridge whose grandmother worked at Bletchley Park as a code-breaker during WWII. According to those who have written the book, it should take months to reach the final answer, revealed after completing various different stages. The puzzles range from easy to mind bending so that should keep you busy for a while!
